Winter / Snow Rules

Alternate Side Parking Nov. 15 thru April 15

The following excerpt from Village Ordinance addresses parking during the winter months.

“On even numbered days of the month between the hours of 12:01 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., vehicles may be properly parked during such time and hours on the even house numbered sides of the street; On odd numbered days of the month between the hours of 12:01 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., vehicles may be properly parked during such time and hours on the odd house numbered sides of the street.

Except as set forth in (a) above, no person shall park or leave standing any vehicle on any street in the residence district in the Village after a snowfall of at least one and one-half inches in depth, until after the snow from such street has been removed, or plowed to the curbline or place suitable to the Village Board.  In case any vehicles are parked or left standing on the street or public parking lot area in violation of this section, they may be removed by or under the direction of the police or street department after one of such departments or representative has attempted to notify the owner to remove such vehicle and it has not been removed.  In case such car is removed by, or at the direction of the Village, the expense of such removal shall be charged against the owner of the vehicle.  The removal of the car by or under the direction of the Village shall not prevent prosecution under this section.”

Snow Removal Placement

When plowing, shoveling, or using your snow blower, please remember that it is unlawful to place snow into Village streets. Instead, place snow onto the curb area or on the sides of your driveway. (Per Village Ordinance).

To avoid being “plowed in” to your driveway this winter, clear a pocket on the “upstream” side of your driveway. Snow pushed by the plow will drop into this pocket instead of blocking your driveway. Don’t forget to clear out the pocket after the plow has gone by. The “upstream” side will generally be the right side of the driveway as you stand on the driveway and face your house.

It is important to keep your refuse and recycling containers in your driveway and out of the street so they are not damaged by the snowplows.

Fire Hydrant Help

If you have a fire hydrant on or near your property, please take the time to clear snow from and around the hydrant to ensure quick access during an emergency. Public Works Department will clear snow from around fire hydrants as time permits. You should also take time to clear around your mailbox to ensure that your postal service is not interrupted.

Sidewalk Responsibility

Village sidewalks are to be cleared of snow by adjacent property owners by 10 am of the day that snow accumulates. If ice cannot be removed from the sidewalk, sand, salt, or a suitable substance should be used on the sidewalk until ice can be removed.  (Per Village Ordinance #6.06 (1))

If you have any questions about snow removal, please contact the Public Works Department at 608-437-1440 or [email protected]
